Glossary
Short definitions for the jobs and formats people search for — written so you can pick the right ToolStudio tool without guessing.
B
Base64
An encoding that turns binary data into ASCII text so it can travel in places that expect text, such as JSON or email. It is not encryption.
BMI
Also called: Body Mass Index
Body Mass Index estimates body size from height and weight. It is a screening number only, not a medical diagnosis.
Browser-based tool
Also called: client-side tool, no upload tool
A utility that runs in your tab with JavaScript (and sometimes WebAssembly) instead of uploading the file to a server first. ToolStudio’s image, PDF, text and developer tools are built this way unless a page says otherwise.
C
Compress PDF
Also called: PDF compressor, shrink PDF
Reducing a PDF’s file size so it is easier to email or upload. On ToolStudio, compression rebuilds pages as images, which usually makes the file smaller but removes selectable text.
Cryptographic hash
Also called: checksum, SHA-256, MD5
A one-way fingerprint of data, such as SHA-256 or MD5. Hashes check integrity; they are not encryption and should not store passwords by themselves without a proper password hash.
D
DNS lookup
Asking the Domain Name System for records about a hostname, such as A, AAAA, MX, TXT or CNAME. Useful when checking email or website setup.
E
EMI
Also called: Equated Monthly Installment, loan EMI
Equated Monthly Installment — a fixed monthly payment on a reducing-balance loan. ToolStudio’s EMI calculator uses INR amounts and is informational, not a loan offer.
EXIF metadata
Extra data stored inside many photos, such as camera model, date and sometimes location. Compressing or converting an image on ToolStudio creates a fresh file without copying that metadata.
G
GST (India)
Also called: Goods and Services Tax
Goods and Services Tax in India. ToolStudio’s GST calculator can add or remove listed slabs (nil, 5%, 18%, 40%). Rates are informational and do not decide the rate for a particular supply.
H
HEIC
Also called: HEIF
Apple’s High Efficiency Image Container format, common for iPhone photos. Many websites and Windows apps prefer JPEG, so people convert HEIC to JPG before uploading.
I
Image compression
Also called: compress image, reduce image size
Re-encoding a JPEG, PNG or WebP so the file takes fewer bytes. Quality settings trade sharpness for size. ToolStudio strips metadata when it re-encodes.
J
JSON
JavaScript Object Notation — a text format for structured data used by APIs and config files. A JSON formatter pretty-prints or minifies it and can show where a syntax error is.
JWT
Also called: JSON Web Token
JSON Web Token — a signed string with a header, payload and signature, often used for auth. Decoding shows the claims; it does not prove the signature is valid unless you verify it separately.
M
Merge PDF
Also called: combine PDF, join PDF
Combining two or more PDF files into one document, usually in an order you choose. Also called join PDF or combine PDF.
P
Also called: Portable Document Format
A Portable Document Format file describes pages so text and graphics look the same across devices. A PDF may contain selectable text, scanned images, or both.
Q
QR code
A square barcode that stores a URL, Wi-Fi details, contact card or plain text. You can generate one as PNG or SVG, or scan one from an image or camera.
R
Regular expression
Also called: regex, regexp
A pattern language for matching text. ToolStudio’s regex tester uses JavaScript syntax and a timeout so a bad pattern cannot freeze the tab.
S
Selectable text in PDFs
Text you can copy from a PDF exists as real characters, not just pixels. Scanned pages are pictures of text. Compressing a PDF by rasterizing pages removes selectable text even if the file gets smaller.
Split PDF
Breaking one PDF into separate files by page ranges or every N pages. Useful when you only need part of a document.
U
UUID
Also called: GUID
A Universally Unique Identifier — a 128-bit value often used as a database or API id. ToolStudio can generate UUID v4 or v7 in bulk with the browser crypto API.
W
WebAssembly (Wasm)
Also called: Wasm
A compact binary format that lets browsers run heavy code closer to native speed. Some ToolStudio features (for example video tools) may download a Wasm library the first time you use them.
WebP
An image format from Google that often produces smaller files than JPEG or PNG at similar quality. Useful for websites; not every older app opens it.
